World Card is a combination of two different subjects, each played with the same game format.
The first subject is Current Events. Players are faced with questions about major events that have happened worldwide during the past two years. Before each question is read by a central reader, players hear the topic of the question and are asked to wager either 6 or 4 or 2 points that they will know the answer to the question. Players understand that, if they answer, a correct answer will earn the number of points wagered, whereas an incorrect answer will lose the number of points wagered. All questions are multiple choice (A, B, C, or D). A further twist is that each player has TWO abstentions that may be used out of the ten questions each round. A player may abstain and accept a score of zero on a question, even after hearing the question and choices.
The second subject is a Theme that is selected by a committee of teachers for the next school year. The rules of play are the same as for the Current Events round, except that in the theme round students are allowed to use a limited number of resource books with which to find the answer. If the student can find proof for their answer within two minutes they are awarded four bonus points in addition to their wager. Examples of past themes are: Women in World History, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, The Former Soviet Union, The 1960's, and Space Exploration.
